SANTA CLARA -- Alex Smith's near-perfect passing showing Monday night earned him his first career NFC offensive player of the week honor, the NFL announced Wednesday morning.
Smith completed 18 of 19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns in the first-place 49ers' 24-3 win at Arizona.
The last 49ers offensive player to earn such NFL-issued honors was Frank Gore, doing so twice in the 2009 season.
Three weeks ago, Smith was nominated for the award after passing for 303 yards and three touchdowns in a 45-3 rout of the Buffalo Bills. Smith had to settle instead for the FedEx Air Player of the Week honor.
Smith's 18-of-19 effort came one attempt shy of qualifying for the NFL record for single-game completion percentage. The 49ers have submitted a play for league review to see if a fourth-quarter rushing attempt by Michael Crabtree actually could have been a completion.
