SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers cut into their league-high, 14-player receiving corps Tuesday, releasing former Seattle Seahawks wideout Charly Martin to re-sign punter/kicker Colton Schmidt.

Martin made one of training camp's better catches two days ago, when he had a sideline reception against starting cornerback Carlos Rogers. Martin had been claimed off waivers in July from the Seahawks, who cut him to add 49ers long-snapper prospect Kyle Nelson.

Schmidt, a UC Davis product, was released Friday when the 49ers signed wide receivers Austin Collie and Lavelle Hawkins. Schmidt provides relief for punter Andy Lee and kicker Phil Dawson.
