Between the Vines is a biweekly column on wine and wine making in the Livermore Valley region. This column was contributed by Jim Frost, a winemaker and co-owner of AuburnJames Winery.
Winery Name: AuburnJames Winery
Owners: Matt Ospeck, Mary Ann Cope, Jim Frost
About Us: The AuburnJames Winery was born in 2005 with the first crush of cabernet sauvignon grapes from the Raywood Vineyard in Napa Valley and a handshake between Matthew Ospeck and me. We share a passion for artisan winemaking and are committed to a process that is, for the most part, done by hand.
Several expansions later, our winery facility in Livermore is 7,000 square feet and produces about 3,500 cases annually, however most AuburnJames varietals and blends do not exceed 400 cases. We are intent on producing small lots of California wines that are designed specifically for our wine club membership.
We recently completed the AuburnJames Tasting Room & Gallery in downtown Danville that is open six days a week (closed Mondays) along with light food pairings in a setting that showcases the talents of many great local, national and internationally renowned artists.
Our tasting room also is an official retail location for Michael Chiarello's NapaStyle collection.
Our Wines: AuburnJames wines begin in the spring of each growing season when Matt and I walk the vineyards
The single-vineyard-designate cabernet sauvignon wines as a group are our bestselling and flagship wines. Our most expensive wine is the 2005 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve at $90, and the least expensive is our 2008 Napa Valley Bella Vista Chardonnay that sells for $28.
Special Features: During special events in Danville and most Friday nights through the holidays we host live acoustic music performed by local artists. We can accommodate intimate gatherings of as few as two, and the entire gallery can be reserved for parties up to 55 people.
The AuburnJames room, a small, private gallery that comfortably hosts up to 10 seated or 20 standing, showcases the work of particular artists and may be reserved for private tastings, parties, meetings and luncheons, even while the main tasting room is open.
Hours & Tasting Fees: The Danville tasting room is open from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday; noon to 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Prices for wine flights and pairings vary. More information is available at www.auburnjames.com.
Location: The winery is in Livermore, and the tasting room is at 321 Hartz Ave., Suite 1 in Danville
