oct. 6 Shop for the Cause -- 1-6 p.m. The National Alliance on Mental Illness Tri-Valley Chapter presents its annual vendor fair. There will be over 30 booths with unique items, including fine art, home decor, jewelry, antiques, purses and more. Franco Finn, the Golden State Warrior's "Hype Man," will emcee the event. oct. 6 & 7 Art in the Park Fine Arts Festival -- 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, This Fundraiser for Art in the Schools. The San Ramon Valley Unified School District will showcase the art of over 75 professional artists from all around the Bay Area who work in painting, jewelry, ceramics, photocopy and other media. oct. 6-7, 13-14 Livermore Valley Opera -- 8 p.m. Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays, Oct. 6, 7, 13 and 14. The LVO will kick off their opera season with Puccini's La Boheme, starring Marie Plette as Mimi, David Gustafson as Rodolfo and Kristin Clayton as Musetta. Oct. 7 Competition for Young Musicians -- The Livermore-Amador Symphony Association annual competition is open to instrumentalists and vocalists who reside or attend school in Pleasanton, Sunol, Livermore, Dublin or San Ramon. Students are eligible through grade 12; if not enrolled in high school, the maximum age is 17. All instruments will be considered. Two musicians will be selected to perform as soloists with the symphony on Feb. 23, and each will be awarded $300. Application deadline is Oct. 7. Competed application must be accompanied by an $8 fee and a CD or cassette tape for preliminary screening. oct. 21 Grape Stomp Half Marathon -- 8 a.m. Oct. 21. The Grape Stomp consists of three distances -- something for everyone. The Half Marathon uses the Arroyo Mocho Trail and the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District Trails through the beautiful south valley vineyards up to Holdener Park. The 10K is an out-and-back course that stays entirely on the Arroyo Mocho Trail. The 5K course stays on paved trails by the river area on the Arroyo Mocho/LARPD trails. The Valley Concert Chorale will open their concert season with "An Afternoon with Gilbert and Sullivan."
