Gauchos hold off Hillsdale-San Mateo

  • The El Cerrito High baseball team scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning and didn't look back in a 5-3 nonleague victory over Hillsdale-San Mateo on March 16. Perry Van Eckhardt accounted for all of the Gauchos' runs in the third inning with a three-run home run. The big inning gave the Gauchos a 4-1 lead. Van Eckhardt finished with three hits in three at-bats, three RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. El Cerrito improved to 5-2-1 with the victory.

    Big inning keys win for College Prep

  • The College Prep baseball team rallied from a 3-1 deficit with four runs in the bottom of the third inning to defeat Stuart Hall-San Francisco 5-3 on March 15. Brian Lin accounted for all of College Park's runs in the third inning with a grand slam. Teammates Matt Stanners and Jake Bass both went 2 for 3 at the plate in the victory. Pitcher Alex Clemens allowed only one earned run in a complete-game win for the Cougars.

    Strong pitching fuels Encinal victory

  • The Encinal High baseball team received a three-hitter from Christian Leung and Kaleo Johnson for a 4-2 West Alameda County Conference victory over the Monarchs on March 13. Leung pitched the first five innings, followed by Johnson, and both

    also had doubles at the plate. Johnson was 2 for 3 with a run and RBI in the victory.

  • California Interscholastic Federation Division I state championship, girls basketball, March 22, Sleep Train Arena-Sacramento, 6 p.m. -- Berkeley (22-11), which limited Oak Ridge-El Dorado Hills to 15 points in the first half of a 56-45 win in the Division I Northern California regional championship, will face Long Beach Poly (29-5) in the state championship.

  • California Interscholastic Federation Open Division state championship, girls basketball, March 23, Sleep Train Arena-Sacramento, 6 p.m. -- Bishop O'Dowd (29-3) will be looking to avenge its only loss to a California team when it faces 30-0 Windward-Los Angeles.

  • California Interscholastic Federation Division V state championship, boys basketball, March 22, Sleep Train Arena-Sacramento, noon -- St. Joseph Notre Dame (25-11) will attempt to win its second Division V state title in three years when it faces Horizon Christian-San Diego (20-11).

  • Briahn Brown, St. Mary's girls track and field -- Brown won the girls high jump at the St. Francis Invitational with a leap of 5 feet, 8 inches. The mark tied the school record, was a four-inch personal best, and is tied for third in the state at press time, according to prepcaltrack.com.

  • Rachel Howard, Berkeley girls basketball -- Howard scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a 56-45 victory over Oak Ridge-El Dorado Hills in the Division I Northern California regional championship game on March 16. She also produced a game-high 27 points, including four 3-pointers, in a 54-46 win over Gunn-Palo Alto in the semifinals on March 12.

  • Perry Van Eckhardt, El Cerrito baseball -- Van Eckhardt slammed a three-run home run in the third inning of a 5-3 win over Hillsdale on March 16. He was 3 for 3 in the game with three RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.

  • Trevor Greenley, Alameda baseball -- Greenley was 3 for 3 with four RBI, a run scored and a walk in an 11-5 victory over San Lorenzo on March 15. He also was 2 for 3 with an RBI in an 8-4 win over Piedmont on March 14.
