The weekend of March 3 and 4 will bring cause for celebration at Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve in Antioch.

That's because the park's underground Greathouse Visitor Center, which storm damage closed in December 2007, will reopen to the public. The damage has been repaired, a new entrance has been built, and visitors will once again be able to view artifacts and photographs from the park's historic mining days.

Starting March 3, the visitor center will be open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays through November. Entry is free, and all ages are welcome.

There's more: Black Diamond's Hazel-Atlas Mine will begin its 2012 season of underground tours with an open house the same weekend.

From noon to 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, park visitors will be able to take free, self-guided tours of 1,000 feet of mine workings, with park staff posted along the way to point out interesting features.

Participants must be 7 or older, but there will be a special area just inside the mine entrance for younger kids to enjoy.

After the open house weekend, mine tours will be available on weekends through November at a cost of $5 per person. More information is available at the Greathouse Visitor Center or by calling 888-327-2757, ext. 2750.

Black Diamond Mines is at the end of Somersville Road, 4 miles south of Highway 4 in Antioch. Parking costs $5 per vehicle when the kiosk is attended.
