Pirates bounce back

  • The Pittsburg High football team responded from two rough defensive performances but shutting out Berkeley 31-0 on Sept. 14. Crajon Menafee scored a 52-yard touchdown on a fake punt to give the Pirates (2-2) some early momentum. Jamal Lockett and the ground game did the rest. Lockett finished with 134 rushing yards and two TDs.

    Panthers roll again

  • Hunter Karnthong scored three touchdowns and threw for another score to lead the Antioch High football team to a 70-20 victory over Dougherty Valley. Elbert Hamilton added 136 rushing yards and three touchdowns in the rout.

    Coover, Wolverines excelling

  • The Deer Valley High girls golf team is off to a great start in Bay Valley Athletic League play, opening the season with wins over Heritage and Liberty. Taylor Coover has been especially impressive. She shot an even-par 36 in a win over Heritage at Deer Ridge Golf Course on Sept. 11, then carded a 1-under 35 at the Brentwood Golf Course when the Patriots beat Liberty two days later.

  • Concord at Heritage, football, Sept. 21, 7 p.m. -- The Patriots' nonleague campaign doesn't get any easier this week. Washington State-bound RB Olito Thompson and the Minutemen travel to Brentwood for a final nonleague game.

  • Freedom at Castro Valley, football, Sept. 21, 7 p.m. -- Freedom's defense could have its hands full with a Trojans squad that is averaging about 30 points per game.

    Stars of the week

  • Taylor Coover, Deer Valley girls golf -- Coover took first place at the Lone Tree Invitational on Sept. 17 by carding a 1-over par 37. Coover was the only East County golfer to finish in the top 10.

  • Hunter Karnthong, Antioch football -- The senior quarterback scored in a variety of ways in a 70-20 rout of Dougherty Valley on Sept. 14. He rushed for two scores, returned a punt 90 yards for a touchdown, threw for a TD, kicked two PATs and ran in two 2-point conversions.

  • Joe Mixon, Freedom football -- The junior rushed for 150 yards on 11 carries and scored on touchown runs of 1 and 65 yards in a Sept. 14 win over San Leandro. Mixon also caught a TD pass in the win.

  • Benji Mock, Heritage boys water polo -- Mock scored five goals to lead the Patriots to a 11-8 win over Liberty on Sept. 13.
