Grant writing workshop set at Los Medanos
Nonprofit organizations, community-based groups and government departments looking to find creative ways to obtain funding are encouraged to attend a grant-writing workshop next month at Los Medanos College.
The free workshop, being hosted by county Supervisor Federal Glover of Pittsburg, will be held from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Oct. 3 at Room 109 on the campus.
Participants must register before the event. Information is available at Glover's county page: www.cccounty.us/supervisorglover.
"In these times when money is scarce, we need to be creative to find other sources of funding," Glover said in a news release.
The workshop includes a talk by Laura Escobar on the funding requirements of the United Way of the Bay Area -- one of the state's oldest granting agencies.
A similar workshop in Hercules earlier this year drew 120 participants.

Sanitary district celebrates Pollution Prevention Month
Ironhouse Sanitary District will be open for a special Saturday collection of household fats, oils and grease (FOG) and to give out information on pollution prevention from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
The event, being held in honor of Pollution Prevention Month, is at the district offices at 450 Walnut Meadows Drive.
In the next few months, Ironhouse Sanitary District ratepayers will be hearing a lot about "Pollution Prevention" or P2. P2 means exactly what it says -- activities that reduce the amount of pollution in our environment. For ISD it means promoting the use of less-toxic substances, implementing conservation techniques and reusing materials rather than putting them into the waste stream.
For example, rather than pouring kitchen grease down the drain where it can cause pipe problems or pollute the environment, the district offers a recycling service to reuse the grease as biofuel that is in turn used to provide a clean air fuel. The company Ironhouse Sanitary District uses to recycle the FOG is part of a program that replaces biofuel or biodiesel in school business.
To help get the information about the P2 program, Ironhouse Sanitary District is starting a new website. The site will feature up-to-date information on the P2 program, P2 event listings, tips and more. The new website can be found at www.ISDP2.org.
