Comedian Don Friesen performs Saturday at El Campanil

ANTIOCH -- Don Friesen, two-time San Francisco Comedy Completion winner, comes to El Campanil Theatre 8 p.m. Saturday at 602 W. Second St.

The only two-time winner of the prestigious San Francisco International Comedy Competition in its storied 35-year history and one of the most requested acts on XM Sirius satellite radio, Friesen ignites the stage with his unique brand of smart, savvy, highly caffeinated comedy.

Engaging, clean, clever and flat-out fun, Friesen's act is a high-energy satire of his life as a suburban husband and father of two trying to get through the day with a little money in the bank and a bit of dignity intact.

'The Fabulous Follies' returns to Antioch

ANTIOCH -- The Vagabond Players opens "The Fabulous Follies," a revue with 50 singers, dancers and performers, at 8 p.m. Sept. 28. The play continues Sept. 29 and Sept. 30 at El Campanil Theatre, 602 W. Second St.

Additional dates are 8 p.m. Oct. 5 and 6 and 2 p.m. Oct 7.

"The Fabulous Follies" will showcase the talents of performers from ages 25 to 75 in lavish costumes, dancing, singing and entertaining. It's a showcase of not only senior talent but also professional artists of all ages in an eclectic combination of dance, comedy, musical skits and production numbers.

Director Sharon Redman and choreographer Jennifer Miller have assembled more than performers for a spectacular show.

Heritage High performs 'Servant of Two Masters'

BRENTWOOD -- Heritage High School Rising Stars present Carlo Goldoni's 18th-century masterpiece "Servant of Two Masters. "

A comedy with an enduring story of love, passion and mistaken identity it was cleverly updated for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival by Oded Gross and Tracy Young with additional material written specifically for Heritage High School by Chris Fallows.

Young Venetian Clarice can't marry her lover, Silvio. She had been betrothed to Rasponi, who appears to have returned from the dead to claim her. But the Rasponi who appears is actually Beatrice, Rasponi's sister who is in disguise as her brother and has come to Venice to find her suitor, Florinda. Complications arise when a servant greedily seeks employment with both the disguised Beatrice and Florinda trying to serve two masters while keeping the two unaware of the other's presence.

Performances will be at 2 p.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. on Sept. 27 and 28 and 2 p.m. Sept. 29 at the Heritage High School Theater at 101 American Ave.

'The Secret Life of Girls' auditions

ANTIOCH -- Antioch Children's Theatre will hold auditions for "The Secret Life of Girls" at 7 p.m. Oct. 1 and 2 at the Virginia J. Calisesi Studio Theatre, 512 W. Second St., Antioch.

Frank Ballesteros directs. Auditions are open to actors ages 12 and older. Everyone will have a speaking role.

International film series features 'Montevideo'

ANTIOCH -- The International Film Showcase presents "Montevideo, Taste of a Dream" playing at 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Sunday at El Campanil Theatre, 602 W. Second St.

A huge hit in Serbia, this drama, set in 1930, tells the story of a time when soccer united a nation. Named after the Uruguayan city where the inaugural World Cup event was held, director Bjelogrlic's adaptation of journalist Vladimir Stankovic's best-selling book centers on the relationship between two top players: natural talent/poor boy "Tirke" Tirnanic and playboy/superstar "Mosa" Marjanovic.

The film is part of a new collaborative effort with the International Film Showcase, which has a successful foreign film series in Orinda.

The Frankie G and The Convictions perform at Streets concert

BRENTWOOD -- The Streets of Brentwood Fall Concert Series continues with Frankie G and The Convictions blues band on Friday.

The performance is from 6 to 8 p.m. at 2565 Sand Creek Road.

The series runs Fridays through Sept. 28 with The Other Stones (Rolling Stones tribute band).

Local writers invited to take part in anthology

BRENTWOOD -- The city of Brentwood, Brentwood Writes and Brentwood Poet Laureate Kati Short invite all local writers to submit poetry, short story or nonfiction for an anthology to be published by the city of Brentwood.

Any subject is welcome as long as it is not insulting or abusive. All writers in Pittsburg, Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley, Byron, Discovery Bay, Knightsen and Bethel Island, or writers who are regular participants at Brentwood Writes Open Mic, are welcome. High school students are encouraged to contribute. Submissions will be accepted through Sept. 28.
