ANTIOCH -- A local restaurant will host a fundraising effort to help the city cover the cost of rebuilding a play structure that was destroyed by a suspicious fire Sept. 17.
The fire at City Park, reported around 10:40 p.m. amid clear weather conditions, was "suspicious by its very nature," according to Contra Costa Consolidated Fire Marshal Lewis Broschard. Wooden structures in the play set were charred and destroyed; other parts simply melted onto the ground.
The fundraiser, organized by community improvement organization Take Back Antioch, will be held all day Saturday and Sunday at UNO Chicago Grill, at 4827 Lone Tree Way in Antioch.
The Dream Builders play set was built by volunteers five years ago as part of a renovation effort at the park, which had once been a haven for drinking and drug use. The city has insurance on the structure, but it carries a $25,000 deductible.
Diners should mention the fundraiser to their server when they are seated, and 20 percent of their check will be donated to the City Park rebuilding fund. A raffle featuring prizes donated by local merchants will also be held; 100 percent of ticket proceeds will be donated.
