Strong start for Patriots

  • A challenging nonleague schedule has prepared the Heritage High girls volleyball team for Bay Valley Athletic League play and the Patriots are off to a solid start. The Patriots won their first two matches over Freedom and Antioch, both in three games. Claire Hannigan and Bridget Grant led the Patriots against the Panthers on Oct. 4.

    Lions win a pair

  • Liberty High's girls volleyball team opened Bay Valley Athletic League play with victories over Pittsburg and Freedom during the week of Oct. 1. The Pittsburg match was especially thrilling with the Lions needing five games to close out the win. Kiana Pinkiwski tallied 22 digs and five aces in the match to lead Liberty. The Lions were also 3-2 at the Dougherty Valley tournament.

    Heritage on top

  • More than halfway through the league season, the Heritage High girls golf team looks like the top team in the Bay Valley Athletic League. The Patriots beat Antioch 8-1 on Oct. 4 to improve to 11-3 overall and 6-0 in BVAL play. Courtney Samuda, who holds down the No. 1 singles spot, beat her Antioch opponent in straight sets. The Panthers got their lone win at No. 2 singles.

  • Freedom at Pittsburg, football, Oct. 9, 7 p.m. -- There's still lots of season left, but both teams know this game has major BVAL title implications. Both teams have had two weeks to prepare after byes last week.

  • Shasta at Los Medanos, junior college football, Oct. 10, 3 p.m. -- The Mustangs host the 2-3 Knights in their Bay Valley Conference opener.

    Stars of the week

  • Austin Graham, Deer Valley boys water polo -- Graham scored seven goals, but it wasn't enough for the Wolverines, who lost to Livermore 15-13 on Oct. 4.

  • Bridget Grant, Heritage girls volleyball -- Grant contributed 12 kills, three blocks and three aces in the Patriots' three-game win over Antioch on Oct. 4.

  • Lisa Tilcock, Freedom girls cross country -- The senior was the winner of a dual meet with Heritage on Oct. 3, posting a time of 19:08.75 on the 3.1 course at Freedom. Her performance helped the Falcons edge the Patriots 26-29.

  • Nsimba Webster, Deer Valley football -- The junior quarterback had another big week running the offense, completing 7 of 9 passes for 214 yards and four touchdowns in a 49-13 victory over Antioch on Oct. 5 in both teams' BVAL opener.
