ANTIOCH -- Many people had the chance to celebrate their birthdays on the last repetitive date of the century, Dec. 12, 2012; however, few had the chance to celebrate that day on their 12th birthday -- and with their twin brother.
Zack and Russell Martinez had a fun day at school and then a small celebration on their actual birthday with mom and dad. The big plans were set for the following weekend when family from Southern California and Oregon came to Antioch for a big birthday celebration and family reunion.
"The boys were really looking forward to seeing their grandparents and the rest of the family," said their mom, Heather Martinez.
The plans for the weekend went well a number of family members gathering to ice-skate in Walnut Creek on Friday evening. The rest of the weekend was packed with the family playing cards and "hanging out" together.
Back in 2000, when the twins were born, the twins' mom said she didn't even think about the fact that the boys would be celebrating their birthday on this iconic day. The boys were born five weeks premature with Russell being born first and Zack following two hours and six minutes later.
"We were just blessed to have them," she said.
The family didn't even make the connection of the 12/12/12 birthday for the boys until last year when one of the boy's cousins, Dashel, was born on Nov. 11, 2011. Making Dashel an 11/11/11 baby.
On any given day Martinez said the boys would be following one of their favorite sports, which at this time is basketball. "They both enjoy playing sports together," she said.
Right now their favorite basketball team is the Oklahoma City Thunder and mom says they do their best to watch as many games as possible. When they aren't watching basketball or participating in Travel Ball Basketball or playing for their school basketball team, they're playing youth football, or any kind of sport that is going on at the time.
For mom and dad this is a real treat because the parents are sports photographers, and of course one of their favorite subjects is taking pictures of the boys.
"Seems like we have thousands of photos of them," Martinez said.
The boys don't always agree on everything though. Russell's favorite NFL team is the Chargers, while Zack's is the Ravens.
The boys attend school at a Christian school in Concord and are also active at Golden Hills Church in Brentwood. They participate in many of the youth activities at the church.
One thing is for sure, Russell and Zack are already having a special December and Christmas is just around the corner.
