ANTIOCH -- The Antioch Bridge was briefly closed in both directions Monday night after three cars collided and began leaking fluid mid-span, the California Highway Patrol said.
CHP units responded to the stretch of Highway 160 at 9:35 p.m. after callers reported a crash between a Saab, a Honda and a pickup truck headed north on the bridge, Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said. Officials closed the two-lane bridge at the toll plaza at 9:48 p.m. after discovering the cars could not be safely moved because they were leaking fluid.
Crews worked for half an hour to move the vehicles off the bridge and clean up any hazardous fluid, Van Eckhardt said. The bridge reopened about 10:15 p.m.
While the collision was initially reported as an injury crash, officials later changed their assessment to "property damage only" and called off medical crews, Van Eckhardt said.
