The A's have claimed right-handed hitting first baseman Nate Freiman on waivers from the Houston Astros.

Freiman hit .298 with 24 homers at Double-A San Antonio for the Padres last year. The Astros, who had claimed Freiman in Decembers's Rule 5 draft, had determined they had no room on the roster for him.

As a Rule 5 player, he must either stay on the big league roster all season or be offered back to his old team, the Padres.

The A's have seven games in which to form a final opinion of whether or not to keep Zeigler on the opening day roster.

Earlier Saturday, A's manager Bob Melvin said he would be comfortable having left-handed hitting Brandon Moss as his only true first baseman.

But, he added, the club is always looking "to see what pops up."
