OAKLAND — A's manager Bob Melvin wasn't sure if he'd have Jarrod Parker in his bullpen for Game 5, but he was pretty sure he would not calling on Bartolo Colon for relief.

"He's willing to do anything,'' Melvin said said of Colon. "But I wouldn't want to bring him in with men on base, for example.''

Colon, 40, an 18-game winner, was the expected Game 5 starter. But Melvin on Wednesday cast his fate with Sonny Gray, the hard-throwing rookie who shut down Detroit in Game 2.

Meanwhile, Parker, the Game 3 starter, was of uncertain status heading into the winner-take-all game.

Parker was going to throw on the side before the game, then take some tosses off the mound to see if his arm was up to pitching out of the bullpen.
