PHOENIX — The weather is supposed to turn wet this weekend in the Valley of the Sun, and the A's are prepared if Saturday's game is rained out.
Sonny Gray, down to make his first start of the spring against the Texas Rangers at Phoenix Municipal Stadium, would get his start pushed back a day to Sunday in Tempe against the Angels.
``We already had a short day scheduled,'' manager Bob Melvin said, indicating one day's delay wouldn't be a big deal.
The manager also said that left-handed starter Scott Kazmir will face A's hitters on the back field at Phoenix Muni either Saturday or Sunday before he debuts in a Cactus League game.
One reason for that is that Melvin is wary of having any of his starters pitch against American League West competition during the spring, although it will happen from time to time.
Another starter, Dan Straily, will pitch on the back field Friday before he, too, faces Cactus League competition.
