Dr. Celia Barberena

HAYWARD -- With the president of Chabot College gone -- her last day was to be Dec. 31 but she left earlier this month on vacation -- three contenders are in the running to replace her.

Celia Barberena announced her retirement last summer after serving as president for nearly four years, thanking the board and Chabot community for a gratifying stint and an "opportunity to serve this community and to fill my life with meaning and purpose."

The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District held forums to vet four finalists, two from within the district and two from outside. Since then, one has withdrawn for unspecified reasons.

The remaining candidates are:

  • Edward Bush, the vice president of student services for Riverside City College. Bush has 17 years of experience in higher education, 14 at the Riverside Community College District.

  • George Railey, the vice president of academic services at Chabot. Before Chabot, Railey held administrative posts in the Yosemite Community College District and Los Rios Community College District. His career in education spans 30 years.

  • Susan Sperling, the dean of social sciences at Chabot. She has been with Chabot for 25 years and served in a number of capacities, including faculty member, faculty leader, administrator and community liaison.

According to college spokeswoman Laura Weaver, the board is expected to make a decision in February.
