OAKLAND -- A smoking electrical box at an East Oakland home led authorities Thursday night to an indoor marijuana grow with 300 plants, officials said.
Firefighters responded to the house in the 7000 block of Lacey Avenue about 7:30 p.m. after a report of the electrical box fire on the exterior of the house.
Crews quickly extinguished that and forced their way into the home to check for fire, when they discovered the marijuana operation and called police.
No one was at the home when the fire was started and police were trying to identify who resided there and was growing the marijuana.
Authorities believe the electrical box caught fire because it was overloaded by pirated electricity used to power equipment for the grow.
Damage to the electrical box was estimated to be $7,500.
There were no injuries reported in the incident and police had made no arrests.
