OAKLAND -- Two babies found in a stolen car that crashed in East Oakland after a police chase Thursday were the children of a woman who was in the vehicle, police said Friday.

The incident began about 11:30 a.m. Thursday when officers in East Oakland tried to stop a vehicle reported stolen from Berkeley, Officer Johnna Watson said.

The vehicle sped off and crashed into another car a little more than a mile away near the intersection of East 16th Street and 55th Avenue, Watson said.

One man was arrested at the scene, Watson said. A second person fled and had not been detained as of Friday afternoon.

The two children, an infant and a 1-year-old child, were found in the car, Watson said. They were not hospitalized. Their mother is not facing charges and will retain custody of her children, she added.
