CAMPBELL -- A 56-year-old bicyclist who was struck and killed by a car on Campbell Avenue Thursday evening has been identified as Charles Shaffer, 56, of Cupertino.
Shaffer was on the four-lane road near La Pradera Drive in front of the Kirkwood Plaza Shopping Center when he was hit by a Buick sedan traveling east around 6:30 p.m., said Campbell police Capt. Charlie Adams.
Adams said initial indications are that Shaffer was crossing the street in between intersections when he was hit.
Shaffer was thrown into the windshield of the car, which was shattered, then landed in the roadway, Adams said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 28-year-old driver of the car submitted to a sobriety test, and drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors.
Adams said there is nothing to indicate he was speeding, and that the driver has been very cooperative with investigators and no charges are pending.
