SANTA CLARA -- Residents of a Santa Clara retirement home were evacuated for about two hours Thursday morning after an employee reported seeing a man with a gun inside the building, according to police.
Santa Clara police and a SWAT response team did a floor-by-floor search of the four-story Westmont Retirement Residence on Scott Boulevard near El Camino Real, and did not find anyone suspicious, according to Capt. Phil Cooke.
Police responded to the building at 9:19 a.m. and allowed residents and employees back inside just before 11 a.m.
A SWAT response team was summoned after an employee saw a man with a gun inside, authorities said. The employee had a brief interaction with the man and then called police.
Helmet-clad officers evacuated some of the estimated 100 residents and employees from the building while police conducted a systematic search.
During the evacuation, between 50 and 75 people stood on the sidewalk while police search the building. One woman could be seen from her third-floor balcony of the Westmont watching the proceedings.
The call came on the heels of a Thursday morning manhunt near Lawrence and Central expressways that ended with the arrest of a man wanted on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with a domestic violence incident.
Because the SWAT team was already deployed, they and their armored tactical vehicle were able to quickly get to the retirement home.
