OAKLAND -- The man fatally shot Thursday evening waiting for his food in the drive through lane of an East Oakland fast food restaurant was identified by police Friday as Demariae Clay, 25.

Clay's 19-year-old girlfriend, whose name was not released, suffered a graze wound and cuts from flying glass in the shooting. Both Clay and the woman are from Oakland.

The shooting happened about 6:15 p.m. Thursday in the drive through lane of the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant at 73rd Avenue and International Boulevard.

Police said Clay and the woman were in the woman's Lexus with Clay driving.

They were awaiting their food order when more than one gunmen approached and opened fire on the vehicle, police said

Despite being wounded more than once, Clay was able to drive away across International Boulevard before crashing into a furniture store. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The woman was treated at a hospital. No one else was hurt by the gunfire.

Even though police have not established a motive yet, Officer Robert Trevino said Clay was the intended target. Police said the gunmen may have followed the Lexus to the restaurant.

Police said Clay was the father of three children ranging in age from 6 to 1.

The killing was Oakland's 74th homicide of the year, one less than last year at this time.
