The California Highway Patrol issued this news release late Wednesday announcing the death of Officer Kenyon Youngstrom, who was shot during a traffic stop near Alamo on Tuesday morning:

END OF WATCH -- OFFICER KENYON YOUNGSTROM

This evening at approximately 6:05 PM. CHP Officer Kenyon Youngstrom was pronounced deceased.

Officer Youngstrom entered the CHP Academy in August 2005 and was assigned to the CHP's Contra Costa Area upon graduation in February 2006. He transferred to the CHP's Golden Gate Division headquarters in January 2009 and most recently transferred back to the Contra Costa Area office on Aug. 1, 2012.

Officer Youngstrom served in the U.S. Army Reserves from 1994 to 2000, attaining the rank of Specialist. Officer Youngstrom is the 223rd CHP officer to be killed in the line of duty since 1929. He was 37 years old.

Kenyon is survived by his wife, Karen, two sons and two daughters, parents, Gaylord and Jill Youngstrom of Riverside, Calif., four brothers and a sister.

This tragedy is life altering for his family whom he cherished, and is a tragedy that has affected us all deeply to the core. His family remains strong, united, and courageous. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Officer Youngstrom was known by all around him for his love of God, love for family, and love for his job. He radiated joy and genuine care for all around him. His service and dedication were unwavering.

In his continued commitment to service and contribution, Officer Youngstrom prearranged in the case of his passing, to have his organs donated. His organs which are being donated will save many lives.

Officer Youngstrom's family wanted to once again express their deepest gratitude to the law enforcement family, first responders, medical staff, members of the public, and the media for their support.
