ALAMEDA -- Low-price Japanese retailer Daiso has signed a five-year lease at Alameda South Shore Center, a move that follows the company opening a pop-up store at the mall last December to serve holiday shoppers.

Daiso will move into a 4,100-square-foot space, according to Jamestown L.P. which owns the center and announced the agreement on Wednesday.

"We are very pleased Daiso has been successful at our center, and that Alameda residents have welcomed them so enthusiastically," Michael Phillips, Jamestown's chief operating officer, said in a statement. "Our pop-up storefront program, which provides temporary space for short-term tenants, has proved popular with retailers like Daiso, who want to 'test the waters' before committing to a long-term lease, as well as enterprises offering seasonal merchandise."

The Daiso franchise is owned by Daiso Sangyo Corp. The company is the largest of the Japanese "100 yen stores" -- similar to American dollar stores -- and offers merchandise generally priced at $1.50 or less.

Eleven of the stores are in Northern California, including one on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, or just south of the U.C. Berkeley campus, where its low-priced snacks, bowls, cups and other household items are popular with students.

At the Alameda shopping center Daiso will join Bed Bath & Beyond, TJ Maxx, Old Navy, Petco and other retailers.

When Daiso opened as a pop-up in December, it occupied 1,400 square feet at the site of the former Borders bookstore, one of 200 of the chain's 642 stores that were closed last year as part of the company's bankruptcy proceedings.

The temporary costume shop Spirit Halloween opened as a pop-up at the 594,000-square foot shopping center in the run-up to Halloween, and Pedal Beach Rentals LLC opened a pop-up beach supply and rental shop in June to serve people visiting the nearby Robert Crown Memorial State Beach.

Providing space for pop-ups can help meet the needs of retailers that offer seasonal merchandise, while attracting additional customers to an area, according to Julie Taylor of Cornish & Carey Commercial Newmark Knight Frank, the leasing agent for the Alameda shopping center.

The Daiso store is expected to open at the center in October or early November.
