Here, courtesy of Caltrain, are some numbers tied to the rail system's planned $1.5 billion modernization:
-- The first phase, designing and implementing a new electronic control system for the Caltrain fleet, will cost $231 million. The California Transportation Commission allocated $39.8 million on Thursday and is expected to provide $66.1 million more in 2013. The remaining money will come from the Federal Railroad Administration ($17.3 million), Federal Transit Administration ($27 million), the Federal Highway Administration ($2.8 million), state Proposition 1B ($3.6 million) and Caltrain's member agencies, San Francisco, the San Mateo County Transit District and the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority ($74.3 million)
-- Electrification infrastructure will cost $785 million, while purchasing a new fleet of electric trains will run $440 million.
-- The overall modernization effort will get $730 million from the state of California, $706 million of it from Proposition 1A funds related to high-speed rail, and $500 million from the federal government. The rest will come from regional sources like the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and Caltrain's member agencies.
-- Caltrain supporters claim the electrification project will create 9,600 job-years (a job year is one job for one year), boost Caltrain ridership by around 50 percent and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent.
