OAKLAND -- A 49-year-old man died after falling from a roof in North Oakland on Monday, police said.

The Alameda County Coroner's office identified the victim as Rigoberto Venegas-Menchaca of Fremont.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing, but police said it appears he slipped and fell from the roof.

Police said the man, who worked for an Oakland-based roofing company, fell about 20 feet from a building at 1095 55th St. shortly after 2 p.m. Four others were on the roof when Venegas-Menchaca fell, a roofing company official said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

A roofing company official said the man was well trained but lost his footing while rolling out some material on the roof. He had been working as a roofer for at least a decade, the company official said.

Police are investigating the fall and the coroner's office will conduct an autopsy and will likely have a specific cause of death later this week, a spokesman said.
