KNIGHTSEN -- Parents, students and former colleagues will remember a former Knightsen School teacher at an informal gathering this month.

The district will celebrate the life of Laura Filbert at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 22 with a luminaria and reception on the campus at 1923 Delta Road, Knightsen.

Filbert died Jan. 2 after a long battle with cancer. She was 53.

A resident of the tiny town of Acampo just outside Stockton, Filbert joined Knightsen School District in 1997 as a substitute teacher and the following year signed on as a full-time instructor. She taught kindergarten, first and second grades at both Knightsen School and Old River Elementary School before retiring late last year.

Those wishing to attend can pick up battery-operated candles and small paper bags to decorate at the school office; the evening will begin with a walk through the luminaria followed by an informal reception in the multipurpose room.

Donations can be made to California Pacific Medical Center Fund (Cancer Clinical Trial Research Fund), P.O. Box 45902, San Francisco, CA 94154.
