SANTA CLARA -- It didn't take long Wednesday night for the Earthquakes' fortunes to suffer in the Western Conference semifinals at Buck Shaw Stadium.

Disaster struck in the 12th minute when stalwart defender Victor Bernardez left the Major League Soccer playoff game with a right knee strain. He was replaced by Ike Opara.

Bernardez' impact on the club was underscored when Los Angeles Galaxy's Robbie Keane scored in the 17th and 34th minutes and the Galaxy added a goal in the 39th minute by Mike Magee to give the visitors a 3-1 aggregate lead in the series. The final result came late Wednesday night.

Bernardez had scored the lone goal in San Jose's surprising 1-0 victory in the first leg of the home-and-home series Sunday in Carson.
