BERKELEY -- A man armed with a handgun stole a UC Berkeley student's backpack Thursday night as the victim walked just north of the campus, police said.

The student was near LeRoy Avenue and Ridge Road about 11 p.m. when the suspect approached him from the front and brandished the dark-colored handgun.

The robber was last seen running toward the campus, police said. The victim was not hurt.

Both Berkeley and university police searched the neighborhood for the man, but did not locate him. The intersection near where the robbery occurred is about a block from the campus.

The student described the suspect as a black man between 40 and 50 years old, about 6 feet tall with a medium build. He has facial hair, possibly a beard, and was wearing dark clothing.

Berkeley police ask anyone with information to call 510-981-5900.
