OAKLAND -- Forty police officers, including SWAT team members, raided an East Oakland apartment complex late Thursday as part of an ongoing investigation into gang violence, authorities said.

Police were seeking three members of one gang and found them, and also arrested five other people at the complex.

The raid happened about 11:45 p.m. Thursday at the complex in the 7800 block of MacArthur Boulevard. A rifle and stolen pistol were recovered.

Police had a search warrant for a ground-floor apartment where two men and a woman who are suspected gang members were the target.

They were arrested, along with another woman who was visiting the apartment and had a warrant for her arrest in another case.

The two firearms were found in that apartment, police said.

Three men with warrants were arrested in the parking area after they tried to run from police.

A man on parole for rape, who was wearing an ankle monitoring bracelet, threw a gun from a second-floor apartment and then jumped down to the pavement where he was arrested, police said. The gun was not recovered, and police said he was not one of the targets until he threw the weapon.

No names were released as police said the investigation is continuing.

Those arrested were booked on a variety of charges, including burglary, possession of stolen property, possession of marijuana, violating probation and parole and gun counts.
