SAN LEANDRO -- The San Leandro Police Department will conduct a DUI and driver's license checkpoint Friday, Dec. 28, the department announced Wednesday.

The checkpoint in the 14800 Block of East 14th Street will begin around 8 p.m. and run for five to eight hours.

Traffic going through the checkpoint will be stopped by officers, who will be checking for alcohol- or drug-impaired drivers. Officers will also check to make sure all drivers have a valid driver's license.

The purpose of the checkpoint is to promote public safety, increase awareness of the dangers associated with drinking and driving and to serve as a deterrent to potentially impaired or unlicensed drivers.

Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the Avoid the 21 Program.
