SAN RAMON -- Jack Barton will become the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District's interim fire chief starting Jan. 1.
Barton replaces retiring fire chief Richard Price. Barton, the district's current operations chief, will serve until a permanent chief is selected, San Ramon Valley Fire District Board president Matthew Stamey said in a news release.
Barton joined San Ramon Valley Fire in 1992 and has held ranks of firefighter, engineer, captain, and battalion chief.
"Chief Barton has the skill set and institutional knowledge to lead the fire district through this transitional time," Stamey said in a statement. "He has full support from the board and the entire agency; he is exceptionally well-qualified."
Barton also has a journalism degree from CSU San Diego, and is a certified chief fire officer, with credentials from the state fire marshal.
Price's retirement is effective Dec. 31. The district's board began recruitment in November, and according to Stamey, is currently reviewing applications. A permanent replacement will be named early next year.
