SAN FRANCISCO -- A Daly City woman nicknamed "Killer" will be charged with murder in connection with the slaying of a man whose body was found bound and gagged on a street along the border of the city's Portola and Visitacion Valley neighborhoods, prosecutors said.
Catherine Uong, 26, appeared in San Francisco Superior Court on Friday after she was arrested Dec. 21 on suspicion of participating in the kidnapping and killing of 26-year-old David Reid, who was discovered Dec. 9 on the 900 block of Brussels Street along with an 18-year-old woman, also bound and badly injured.
Uong will be arraigned Jan. 14 on seven felony charges, including murder, assault, robbery and fraud, said San Francisco District Attorney's spokeswoman Stephanie Ong Stillman. Five other people, all from the East Bay, have already been charged for their alleged involvement in the attack.
There was an arrest warrant out for Uong in San Mateo County at the time Reid was killed, according to San Mateo County District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe. Uong had pleaded guilty July 16 to one count of felony commercial burglary and one count of felony identity theft but failed to appear for her sentencing Sept. 11, Wagstaffe said.
That was not Uong's first conviction for those crimes in San Mateo County, Wagstaffe said. Between 2007 and 2010 she pleaded guilty to several felony counts of burglary and identity theft along with misdemeanor charges of petty theft, filing a false police report and driving on a suspended license.
The San Francisco District Attorney's office claims the defendants in the Dec. 9 homicide knew their victims and may have intended to steal from them.
"This case is definitely unfolding as we speak," said Stillman, "and there is a working theory that credit card fraud is involved."
Authorities say Uong entered a home on the 3700 block of San Bruno Avenue in San Francisco and helped two other defendants assault the 18-year-old woman, who along with Reid was bound and placed in a GMC Yukon. Reid was later shot in the neck.
The other defendants include Heather Leach, 24, of Hercules; Montrail Brackens, 21, of Oakland; and Vincent Bell, 31, of Hercules. Each has been charged with murder, among other felonies. Two other defendants -- Tyler Miller, 19, of Hercules, and Maryann Manalastas, 22, of Oakland -- were charged with accessory to murder and conspiracy to destroy evidence.
