PORTLAND, Maine -- Maine's gay marriage law has gone into effect, and couples are lining up to get the first licenses issued in Portland City Hall.
After waiting years for the opportunity, gay couples in Maine's largest city didn't have to wait a moment longer than necessary with marriage licenses offered after midnight.
Other communities were holding special hours on Saturday.
Voters approved gay marriage in November, making Maine and two other states the first to do so by popular vote. The law is already in effect in Washington state; Maryland's takes effect Tuesday.
