PALO ALTO -- Despite a manhunt that included a helicopter, a police dog and officers, two masked men escaped Saturday night after robbing a liquor store at gunpoint.
The men got away from Century Wine & Spirits on Middlefield Road with 12 bottles of assorted alcohol worth a total of about $230 as well as an undisclosed amount of cash following the roughly 7:55 p.m. hold up, said Palo Alto police. No one was injured in the crime.
Police said one of the robbers pointed a semiautomatic gun at the clerk and demanded booze and money. The assailants put the looted bottles in a backpack and escaped, apparently on foot. No customers were in the store during the robbery.
Palo Alto officers were on the scene within a minute, they said, and a Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office helicopter joined the search. Police from neighboring Mountain View brought a canine to help look for the suspects.
Though the robbers wore masks, police said they appeared to be black men in their 20s. They both wore black jackets and dark pants. One of the suspects was about 6 feet tall with a thin build, the other suspect was roughly 5 feet 10 inches tall.
