PRUNEDALE -- An 87-year-old Prunedale man is accused of shooting his neighbor with a shotgun and striking one of the man's goats.
Monterey County Sheriff's deputies say Phillip Dexter was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of attempted murder, animal cruelty and willfully discharging a firearm with gross negligence.
Dexter is accused of discharging his Winchester shotgun and hitting Cesario Diaz with four shotgun pellets. Diaz was struck in the left ribcage, the right elbow and the back side of his right knee.
Deputies say Dexter also struck one of Diaz' goats with one shotgun pellet, injuring the animal.
Diaz was transported to Natividad Medical Center and treated for his injuries. He and the goat are expected to survive.
Deputies have not released a motive in the shooting.
