Piedmont boys reach championship game
The Piedmont High boys basketball team reached the championship game of the San Diego Division of the Surf N' Slam Tournament before falling 61-48 to Carlmont-Belmont. The Highlanders (8-3) trailed only 28-25 at halftime, but Carlmont had a key 13-6 run in the third quarter. Aidan Davison, Dylan James-Kavanaugh and James Ormond each led Piedmont with nine points in a balanced scoring effort.-- Staff
Carleton lifts El Cerrito over Jordan
Jovante Carleton's two free throws with one second remaining boosted the El Cerrito High boys basketball team to a 60-59 victory over Jordan-Long Beach in the consolation bracket of the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic's National Division on Dec. 29. Tyrell Alcorn scored a game-high 20 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, for the Gauchos, who improved to 10-5 with the victory. Rae Jackson added 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, for El Cerrito. -- Staff
Alameda girls win invitational
The Alameda High girls basketball team defeated Monte Vista 52-43 to win the Lady Wolves Invitational on Dec. 29. Marie Bertholdt led the Hornets in scoring with 22 points and was named all-tournament, along with teammates Maddy Lewis (who had 15 points in the championship game) and Tori McGovern.
