CASTRO VALLEY -- The Castro Valley Sanitary District is offering a free tour of the Davis Street Transfer Station in San Leandro.
Although the tour is not until Sept. 20, those interested are encouraged to register soon. There are only 20 spots, and past tours have filled up quickly. The tour is for district residents and business owners only.
The transfer station processes and sorts 4,000 tons of recyclable and compostable materials a day. A popular part of the tour is the single-stream materials recovery building, which features a high-tech optical sorter, said Pat Krevey of the sanitary district.
The tour takes three hours, and starts at the sanitary district's office in Castro Valley.
"We do provide transportation to Davis Street if they want to ride the bus," Krevey said. "And they are more than welcome to provide their own transportation. We just need to coordinate with them."
Krevey added that the tour involves walking, including over uneven terrain and on stairs.
Those interested may register at www.cvsan.org/dststour or call the district office at 510-537-0757 and ask for Krevey.
