CUPERTINO -- A female pedestrian who was crossing a street in a marked crosswalk died this morning after being struck by a big rig on Foothill Boulevard in Cupertino, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

The collision occurred at about 7 a.m. at the intersection of Foothill and Cupertino Road, according to Sgt. Jose Cardoza, a sheriff's office spokesman.

The sheriff's office is still working on determining the age of the woman, but witnesses said she appeared to be elderly, Cardoza said.

The woman was walking in a marked crosswalk westbound on Cupertino Road when she was struck by the big rig, which was traveling southbound on Foothill in the far right lane, Cardoza said.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor at this time and the driver has been cooperative throughout the investigation, Cardoza said.

The sheriff's office is currently investigating the incident and traffic in the area is being re-routed.
