HAYWARD -- Police on Tuesday continued searching for a suspect they say is responsible for shooting a man several times along a South Hayward street.

The victim, who was shot Monday afternoon, is expected to live, said Sgt. Marc Ormsby.

Officers responded about noon to Pompano Avenue and Cortez Street for a report of an assault with a deadly weapon and learned that an unknown suspect wearing a black beanie cap approached the victim and fired a handgun at him.

The victim, struck several times, was transported to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Ormsby said.

The suspect fled the scene in an unknown but possibly white vehicle driven by a second suspect.

Police said the suspect was a Hispanic male in his late teens or early 20s and that he wore dark clothing. A description of the driver of the vehicle was not known.

Anyone with information about the shooting is encouraged to call police at 510-293-7272 or 510- 293-7000.
