EL CERRITO -- Two teenagers were shot Wednesday after a confrontation with another group of teens erupted in gunfire.
Police found the wounded teens about 2 p.m. after responding to reports of a shooting on the Ohlone Greenway bike path between Stockton and Eureka avenues, said El Cerrito police Capt. Mike Regan. One teen's injuries were superficial and he was treated at the scene, Regan said, while the other was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. The boy underwent surgery and was in stable condition Wednesday evening, he said.
Regan said the injured boys were with another teen when the three of them got into a confrontation with two other teenagers, who retaliated with gunfire. The names and ages of the victims weren't released.
"All we can tell was it was a confrontation between two groups," Regan said. "We don't know what started the confrontation."
Fairmount Elementary School near the shooting scene was locked down briefly while officials made sure the suspects hadn't fled onto the campus, Regan said. Police also responded to nearby El Cerrito High School after witnesses said they saw people running toward the high school, but after checking the campus, officers determined the suspects hadn't fled that way.
High school students were advised, however, to avoid Ohlone Greenway on their way home from school while the investigation was in progress, Regan said.
