OAKLAND -- An elderly man was struck and killed on Interstate 980 at the 17th Street on-ramp Wednesday night, and police are now looking for two vehicles they believe hit the man and then fled the scene.

At 8:43 p.m., CHP officers responded to the on-ramp for multiple reports that a pedestrian had been hit.

CHP officers said at least two cars struck the elderly man, who was possibly a transient, but rather than stopping, the cars drove off.

A third car involved in the incident stayed at the scene with investigators.

The man's identity was not released late Wednesday.

It is unclear how the man ended up on the ramp, but CHP officers said he may have been trying to cross to the other side when he was hit.

Officers are currently working to get vehicle descriptions for the cars that left the scene.
