OAKLAND -- An employee at a downtown sandwich shop was pistol-whipped and shot in the hand by a robber Monday night, police said Tuesday.

Police said three suspects entered the Subway shop, 1917 San Pablo Ave., about 7 p.m. Monday where an employee was alone.

Apparently angry because they could not get money out of a safe, one of the robbers pistol whipped the employee who tried to defend himself and was shot in the hand.

The robbers fled with an undisclosed amount of cash from the register.

The employee was taken to a hospital where he was in stable condition and is expected to recover.

Police don't have a motive yet for the shooting.
