Unraked Encinal takes down Mt. Eden

  • The Encinal High boys basketball team edged Mt. Eden 63-61 on Jan. 25. At the time, the Monarchs were ranked 13th in the East Bay by Bay Area News Group-East Bay, and Encinal was unranked. The victory improved the Jets' record to 13-7 overall and 5-2 in the West Alameda County Conference. Mt. Eden fell to 16-4 overall and 4-3 in WACC play.

    Bishop O'Dowd dismantles Hayward

  • The Bishop O'Dowd High boys basketball team took a 24-8 first-quarter lead on its way to an 83-38 victory over Hayward on Jan. 25 in a West Alameda County Conference game. The Dragons had balanced scoring, as Paris Austin and Dezmond Chatman paced the squad with 16 points apiece. Teammates Jake Crudo and Ivan Rabb added 13 and 11 points respectively.

    Berkeley High's Marie commits to Stanford

  • Berkeley High girls soccer player Nathalie Marie has committed to Stanford, her club coach said on Jan. 28. Marie, a 5-foot-5 forward, was a member of Mustang Soccer Club before a season-ending ACL injury last summer. Mustang coach Chad Harper said Marie probably will redshirt next season.

  • Alameda at Piedmont, girls basketball, Feb. 1, 7 p.m. -- In their last meeting on Jan. 4, the visiting Highlanders took a 34-30 halftime lead on their way to a 62-54 victory in the WACC opener for both teams.

  • St. Mary's at El Cerrito, boys basketball, Feb. 1, 7 p.m. -- The Gauchos had a 6-1 Tri-County Athletic League record entering this week, but the Panthers (2-5 TCAL) won both their league games last week against Pinole Valley and St. Joseph Notre Dame.

  • Oakland Tech at Skyline, girls basketball, Feb. 6, 4:30 p.m. -- A key Oakland Athletic League matchup between the Bulldogs, who entered this week with a perfect 3-0 OAL record, and the Titans, who were one game behind (2-1 OAL) entering this week.

  • Keelan Doss, Alameda boys basketball -- Doss scored a game-high 15 points in a 48-45 loss to Castro Valley on Jan. 25 and also had a game-high 16 points in a 55-53 loss to San Leandro on Jan. 23.

  • Temidayo Yussef, St. Joseph Notre Dame boys basketball -- Yussef scored a team-high 14 points in a 65-49 loss to El Cerrito on Jan. 23.

  • Fernando Daza Garcia, Berkeley boys soccer -- Garcia scored the eventual winning goal early in the second half in a 2-1 victory over Mt. Eden on Jan. 25 that clinched the West Alameda County Conference-Foothill Division title for the Yellowjackets.

  • JoNae Gonzales, Piedmont girls basketball -- The junior guard produced a triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in a 78-48 victory over Arroyo on Jan. 25.

  • Ameela Li, Oakland Tech girls basketball -- Li scored a game-high 23 points in the Bulldogs' 64-54 win over McNair-Stockton on Jan. 26 at the Campolindo Shootout at Bentley. McNair had lost only one game this season before Saturday.

  • Sierra Ng, Head-Royce girls basketball -- Ng scored a game-high 19 points in the Jayhawks' 46-38 victory over University-S.F. on Jan. 26.

  • Elexis Goodwin, St. Mary's girls basketball -- Goodwin scored 18 points on nine field goals and also grabbed eight rebounds in the Panthers' 71-52 victory over Brookside Christian-Stockton at the Campolindo Shootout at Bentley on Jan. 26.

  • Maddie Lipson, El Cerrito girls soccer -- Lipson had eight saves in a 3-0 shutout of Albany in TCAL action on Jan. 22. It was her fifth shutout in a row.
