MARTINEZ -- A 46-year-old inmate found dead in his cell at the Contra Costa County Jail Friday has been identified as Alvin Jackson, of Pittsburg, a sheriff's spokesman said.
Another inmate saw Jackson and notified deputies about 4:10 a.m. Jail medical staff immediately began trying to save Jackson, Contra Costa sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said. Crews from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District arrived at the jail shortly after and continued the life-saving efforts, but pronounced Jackson dead at 4:27 a.m.
Jackson had several preexisting medical conditions, Lee said. The incident will be investigated by the sheriff's office and Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office, following county protocol after in-custody deaths.
