BRENTWOOD -- A fire that started in a back bedroom destroyed a single-story ranch-style home Thursday morning, but the homeowner escaped without injury, a battalion chief said.

Fire crews responding to a single alarm blaze at about 8:45 a.m. found the home off Deer Valley Road near Marsh Creek Road engulfed in flames, East County Fire Batallion Chief Brian Helmick said.

The fire appears to have been caused accidentally, Helmick said, but investigators had not determined how it began.

The homeowner was inside the house, located in the unincorporated part of Brentwood, when the fire began but was able to escape unscathed, Helmick said. No firefighters were injured while dousing the blaze, Helmick said.
