NEWARK -- A bank robbery suspect who barricaded himself inside the EZ 8 Motel on Cedar Boulevard earlier Monday was arrested after police bombed the room with tear gas, police said.
The suspect surrendered to police after being forced from room 207 about 8:30 p.m., said Fremont police spokeswoman Geneva Bosques.
The suspect was one of two men accused of robbing the Bank of the West on the 39500 block of Paseo Padre Parkway in Fremont about 1:40 p.m. Monday. He had been holed up in the room since mid afternoon.
The second suspect was apprehended by police without incident about 3:40 p.m.
Bosques said both men exited the motel room unarmed and were immediately arrested. Their names were not released.
The two men entered the bank wearing bandannas partially covering their faces, simulated they had a weapon under their clothing and then demanded cash, Bosques said. A surveillance camera caught the suspects running out of the bank, get into a full-size maroon Chevrolet pickup truck and then drive off.
About 2 p.m. Bosques said, Newark police spotted a truck that matched the description of the getaway vehicle parked at the Motel 6 near the Mowry Avenue exit on Interstate 880.
Witnesses told Newark police that they had seen two men run from the Motel 6 to the nearby EZ 8, which was partially evacuated for the safety of the guests during the standoff, Bosques said.
Newark and Fremont police then surrounded
The other barricaded himself inside for several hours until he was forced out.
