HAYWARD -- Speed may have been a factor in a crash that killed a 21-year-old man Thursday night, police said.
The crash was reported about 11:30 p.m. on San Clemente Street, between Zephyr Avenue and San Antonio Street, according to Hayward police Sgt. Mark Ormsby. A Ford SUV was driving northbound on San Clemente, approaching San Antonio, when it went off the road, struck a fire hydrant and then broadsided a tree on the driver's side, causing major damage.
The driver, Jose Gomez-Jacobo, was pronounced dead at the scene. There were no passengers in the car, and no one on the street was injured.
Police are still investigating the crash. It was not known if alcohol or drugs were involved.
