OAKLAND -- A 38-year-old man was shot to death outside his car in East Oakland Thursday night, police said Friday.

Police said the victim, Melvin Beverly of San Lorenzo, grew up in East Oakland.

The shooting happened about 9 p.m. in the 7900 block of MacArthur Boulevard.

Police said Beverly had parked his car and left it to go a store when he was shot. He died at the scene.

Police said they don't have a motive yet and no arrests have been made.

The slaying was Oakland's 13th homicide of the year. Last year at this time there were 19 homicides in Oakland.
