SAN JOSE -- A 22-old-man heading to court Friday afternoon was arrested by San Jose police for his alleged role in a 2010 homicide.
Carlos Ruiz Paz, 22, is the third person to be arrested in connection with the shooting and stabbing death of Jose Antonio Vega Calderon, who was killed on April 21, 2010. Two of the suspects, Jose Torres and Alvaro Ochoa, both 22, were arrested within weeks of the killing, which police believe was gang-related.
In January, Ochoa pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter with an enhancement that the crime was done to benefit a street gang, according to the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office. Ochoa is scheduled to be sentenced on June 25.
Torres has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge and has a preliminary hearing set for March 4.
Paz was heading to court on an unrelated matter when he was arrested by the San Jose Police Department's Covert Response Unit, according to police. Paz, who had a no-bail warrant for murder, was booked into jail and remains in custody.
Police say Calderon was attacked at the corner of West San Carlos Street and Willard Avenue and was stabbed and shot by three suspects. Calderon was taken to Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:30 p.m.
